The airfield at Tollerton has a long and interesting history which has been fairly well documented by local residents, but our own archivist has recently turned up information which seems not to be widely known.
I think we all knew about the airfield’s defences from airborne attack, and the heavy-duty gun emplacements on the airfield.
But did we know about the large gun emplacement opposite the airfield (in what is now the back garden of a private residence)?
Well, we do now.
And did we know about the airfield operations which went on over on the west side of Tollerton Lane? We knew, from late 1940s aerial photographs, the building which now houses the dog training centre played a role in RAF Tollerton’s history.
But our archivist has now uncovered official documents which show that area has more of a wartime (and possibly a post-wartime) military story to tell.
If you have any information about what might have gone on at that location, please use the contact form to tell us. We seem to be building an interesting story!
