Secret history 2

A few of the Save Nottingham Airport Group (SNAG) know I’m slightly obsessed with the land opposite the former location of the Bellman Hangar (aka The Bridge Hangar), where Tollerton Park Estate now sits.

My obsession stems from the fact that our first spaniel and I attended puppy training in a building which (my senses told me) was a former military Mess Hall.

I recently mentioned this to our archivist who duly went on a hunt. Imagine my pleasure at being proved right. What was unearthed was a plan which clearly shows RAF involvement on the land west of Tollerton Lane.

There’s the Instructors and pupils canteen, a parachute store, a machine gun range(!), three existing huts bordering Tollerton Lane, a clubhouse and a hangar (on the wrong side of the lane from the airfield).

What this information throws up is the land on the west side of Tollerton Lane played a greater part in RAF Tollerton’s war effort than many of us had previously known.

You can view the detailed plan here.
